I. Getting Started

Welcome to BridgeLog™!

BridgeLog helps you create a complete record of your duplicate bridge sessions without using a paper scoresheet. During the game, you record the auction, opening lead, result, and any notes you want to keep. After the game, BridgeLog can add the hand records from the ACBL website and create a detailed report for you and your partner to review.

Before playing your first session, please take a few minutes to complete the following setup.

1. Set up your User Profile.

From the Main Menu, tap User Profile and enter your name, email address, and, optionally, your ACBL number.

Your BridgeLog Name is the name you’d like to appear in compact displays and reports—typically a first name or short nickname.

2. Set up your Bidding Profile.

This will take 20 to 30 minutes. You can put this off until later, but until you complete it, AI Bidding Analysis will not be tailored to your usual bidding methods and preferences.

3. Choose your bid entry method.

BridgeLog offers two ways to enter bids:

Conventional: Tap a level from 1 through 7, then tap the strain—clubs, diamonds, hearts, spades, or no-trump.

Adaptive: For each strain, a bar shows the next two legal bids. For higher-level bids, swipe the appropriate bar to the left, then tap the bid you want. Advantages are that most bids require only 1 tap, and buttons are larger for people with bigger fingers.

4. Indicate your preferences regarding post-session reports.

Recommended initial settings are on, on, off, off, off. You can return here and change these preferences later.

5. Add a partner.

From the Main Menu, tap New Session, then add a partner. Enter the same basic information that you entered for yourself.

6. Enter any partnership bidding differences.

From the Edit Partner screen, indicate any ways in which your agreements with that partner differ from the preferences in your User Bidding Profile. You can also put this off until later.

7. Add a location/game.

From the New Session screen, add a location/game. Choose names that will make sense when you search your Previous Sessions later. For example:

  • Santa Barbara Bridge Center – Open Game
  • Santa Barbara Bridge Center – 499er
  • Ventura Regional
  • North American Bridge Championship

Note: You’ll need to enter this setup information only once. You can change it whenever you’d like. For future games, you’ll normally just select your partner and location/game with two taps and move on.

II. Starting a New Session

From the Main Menu, tap New Session.

1. Choose your partner.

Tap the partner you’ll be playing with. If this is a new partner, tap Add Partner and enter the requested information.

2. Review bidding agreements if needed.

If you and your partner are using your usual agreements, there’s nothing more to do. If your partnership agreements differ from your normal Bidding Profile, tap Edit to review or modify those differences before starting the session.

3. Choose the location/game.

Tap the game you’ll be playing in. If it isn’t already listed, add it.

Note: Even if there is only one partner and one location/game listed, you must tap both the partner and the location/game before you can continue.

4. Enter your pair number if you’d like BridgeLog to remind you of it throughout the game.
5. Choose the movement type.
  • Mitchell: You and your partner remain in the same compass positions throughout the session.
  • Howell: Your compass positions may change from round to round.
6. Enter the number of boards per round.

BridgeLog uses this number to determine when a new round begins, when to remind you to confirm or change the board number, and, for Howell movements, when to ask you to confirm your positions.

7. Confirm your positions.

For a Mitchell movement: Tap Rotate until you and your partner are shown in the correct seats. Then tap Confirm.

For a Howell movement: Indicate the two compass positions in which you will sit. Your partner will sit in the other two positions.

8. Review the brief setup reminder, then begin play.
III. During a Session

BridgeLog guides you through each board as you play.

You will inevitably make some mistakes as you enter bids, board numbers, and other information. Don’t worry, you can make corrections immediately, later during that board, after that board, and after your session. See Section V, below, for more information.

1. Confirm or change the board number

At the beginning of each round, BridgeLog shows a blinking board number as a reminder to confirm or change it.

To confirm the displayed number, tap it once.

To change it, tap it again and select the number of the board you are about to play.

For the remainder of the round, BridgeLog advances the board numbers in numerical order.

If you are asked to play a board out of sequence, simply tap the board number and select the correct one.

2. For a Howell movement, confirm or change your position

At the beginning of each round, BridgeLog shows a blinking NS↔︎EW button as a reminder to verify your positions. Your name and your partner’s name appear beneath the appropriate compass letters: N, E, S, or W.

To confirm the displayed positions, tap NS↔︎EW once.

To change them, tap NS↔︎EW again.

3. Enter the auction

Tap each call as it is made, including passes, doubles, and redoubles.

If you’re using the conventional entry keyboard, tap a number and a strain to register each bid.

If you’re using the adaptive entry keyboard, only one tap is necessary for bids within 2 levels of the current bid. For larger jumps, swipe bidding bars to the left to reveal higher-level bids.

Note that BridgeLog activates and deactivates bidding buttons as auctions progress so that only legal bids can be entered.

After four passes at the beginning of the auction, or three consecutive passes after a bid has been made, the End Auction button will blink. Tap it to confirm that the auction has ended.

BridgeLog then determines the contract and declarer from the auction you entered.

4. Enter the opening lead.

Tap the appropriate rank and suit.

5. During play.

In accordance with ACBL rules, the During Play screen displays no information about the board.

6. Enter the result.

When play is complete, tap Enter Result and record whether the contract was made, was made with overtricks, or went down.

For the most common results — down 2, down 1, made exactly, or made with 1 or 2 overtricks — you can tap a single button.

For any other result, swipe the horizontal wheel left or right until the correct result appears in the center of the window, then tap the pulsating green checkmark.

7. Review the Summary screen.

At the conclusion of each board, BridgeLog displays the auction, opening lead, result, and score.

You can also enter a note that you want to appear in the post-session report.

If anything is incorrect, tap the item you want to change and follow the instructions.

If everything is correct, tap Next Board.

After your final board, tap End Session in the lower-right corner of the screen.

IV. Responding to Director Interventions
1. Director-Approved Irregular Calls

Occasionally, a player makes an irregular call and the director rules that a player may or must make a call that would normally be illegal and impossible to enter into BridgeLog.

To enter that bid, first tap the gavel button. Then BridgeLog will allow you to enter a bid that would otherwise be prohibited.

After that call is entered, the auction proceeds normally.

2. Director Inquiries About Earlier Boards

Occasionally, a director may approach you and ask about an earlier board.

Tap Boards at the bottom of the screen to see your previously played boards and their contracts, opening leads, results, and scores.

Then tap Play at the bottom-left of the screen to return to your current board.

V. Correcting Input Errors

BridgeLog allows you to correct mistakes during boards, after boards, and after sessions.

1. Correcting the auction while on the Bid Screen

To remove the most recent calls, tap the backspace button as many times as needed.

To correct an earlier call, tap the first incorrect bid. You can then choose to:

  • Change that bid only
  • Insert a missing bid before it and shift the later calls one position later
  • Delete that bid and shift the later calls one position earlier
  • Delete that bid and all subsequent bids

Then enter any additional bids as needed.

2. Correcting the auction from a later screen

From the Lead, Before Play, or Result screen, tap Revisit Auction, then make the correction as described in Section 1.

3. Correcting the opening lead

While still on the Lead screen, use the backspace button.

From the Before Play or Result screen, tap Re-enter Lead.

4. Correcting bids, leads, and results from the Summary screen

To change the auction, opening lead, or result, tap the item you want to correct and follow the instructions.

5. Correcting a previous board

Tap Boards at the bottom of the screen, then tap the board you want to edit.

6. Correcting board numbers

Tap Boards, then select the affected board. You can choose to:

  1. 1.Renumber that board
  2. 2.Renumber that board and one or more consecutive boards
  3. 3.Swap its board number with another board
7. Correcting information after sessions

From the Main Menu, tap Previous Sessions.

Select the appropriate session and then the board you want to correct.

You can then edit that board’s auction, lead, result, and board number.

Any corrected information will be used in the post-session report.

8. Resuming an accidentally terminated session

From the Main Menu, tap Previous Sessions.

Select your most recent session, which will be at the top of the list of sessions.

Tap Resume.

VI. The Post-Session Report

Here’s where all your efforts to enter accurate information will pay off! You’ll be able to produce a report that you and your partner can use to guide discussion and improvement.

You can access your report immediately after concluding your session, on the Session Over screen, or at any time later, on the Previous Sessions screen. Although you can view your report on your iPhone, it is best viewed on a large tablet, a laptop computer, or a desktop computer.

Although BridgeLog runs only on an Apple iPhone, its reports are viewable on any standard tablet or computer. That’s because its reports are html files, which can be viewed on any web browser.

1. Generating and Accessing Your BridgeLog Basic Report

The complete report BridgeLog Basic Report is accessible immediately upon completing a session.

To view the report on your iPhone:

  • If a View Report button is visible, tap it.
  • If not, then tap Create Report, and then tap View Report.

To view your report on a larger device:

  1. a.On your Session Over screen, tap Send Report

    OR

From the Main Menu Screen, tap Previous Sessions, tap the relevant session, tap Send Report.
  2. b.Tap Mail
  3. c.Fill in the “to:” field with recipients’ email addresses.
  4. d.Tap the up arrow in the upper right-hand corner.
  5. e.You’ll see a message that your email message has queued. If it does not send, the problem most likely resides in your email platform’s configuration, not BridgeLog.
  6. f.On your larger device, open the email and click on open report. Instruct other email recipients to do the same.

If you need to resend an email, follow the above steps a through f.

After tapping Send Report, you can choose other options besides email. You can text report links to yourself and others, or you can export them to nearby larger devices with AirDrop.

To have your reports sent automatically when sessions conclude, from the Main Menu tap User Profile. Then tap Report Preferences and turn on the desired options.

2. Generating and Accessing Your BridgeLog Pro and BridgeLog AI Report

It is easiest to generate and view BridgeLog Pro Reports and BridgeLog AI Reports on screens larger than iPhones. Computers are best – either Macs or PCs. To do so, follow this procedure:

  1. a.Generate a BridgeLog Basic report on your computer, following the steps a through f listed in Section 1 on the previous page.
  2. b.Follow the instructions in the Appendix.
3. Reviewing Your BridgeLog Report

The Overall Statistics section displays first and includes the following:

  • A list of boards and their contracts, leads, results, and scores
  • A list of boards played by the user; number of slams bid, made, and set; number of games bid, made, and set; number of partials bid, made, and set
  • A list of boards played by partner; number of slams bid, made, and set; number of games bid, made, and set; number of partials bid, made, and set
  • A list of boards played by the opponents; number of slams bid, made, and set; number of games bid, made, and set; number of partials bid, made, and set
  • A graphical representation of results when user, partner, and opponents were declarer
  • A list of possible missed games – when sufficient tricks for game were taken but games were not bid
  • A list of possible missed games – when 12 or 13 tricks were taken but slams were not bid
  • A list of the 3 best and 3 worst boards with regard to scores
  • Notes recorded for each board

To access the Detailed Board Information section, tap the button in the top green header. All users will then see:

  • A list of all boards, their contracts, leads, results, scores, and notes
  • Auction details
  • Space for 3 rounds of comments by user and partner (see Section 5 below)

In the Detailed Board Information section, BridgeLogPro and BridgeLog AI users can click buttons to see additional information:

  • Hand Evaluation – This section shows adjusted point count totals for each hand. Tap North, East, South, or West to see the analysis for each hand. Tap the “Show calculation rules” button for a list of adjustments and other metrics.
  • Partnership Fit – This section shows further adjustments in point counts when the partnership has an 8-card trump suit fit or better. Tap N-S or E-W to see the analysis for each partnership. Tap the “Show calculation rules” button for details.
  • Double Dummy – This section shows the maximum number of tricks that each player could have made as declarer in each suit if all players could see all hands and if all players played as well as possible. Results are informative but do not necessarily reflect expected outcomes.
  • Comparison of Double Dummy results to the board’s actual results.
  • Board Comparison – a table of contracts, results, and scores on this board across all players with your performance highlighted

In the Detailed Board Information section, BridgeLogAI users can click AI Bidding to see analyses of their partnership’s bidding. AI analyses consider the user’s and partner’s bidding profiles, affirms correct bids, and suggests better alternatives.

AI is not perfect. AI makes mistakes. Please regard AI feedback as stimuli for discussion rather than definitive judgments.

4. Sharing Comments

BridgeLog reports are designed to facilitate discussion between users and their partners. At the bottom of the Detailed Board Information section of each report are spaces for comments. Users typically enter comments first.

The procedure for users and partners is as follows:

  1. a.Review all boards and enter all comments. Comments are automatically saved as they are entered.
  2. b.When you are done commenting, go to the top of the Detailed Board Information section and click on “Notify [Partner] of my new comments.
  3. c.Your partner will receive an email with a button that opens the commented report.

For your convenience, in the Detailed Board Information section of each report, boards with new comments have a bold circle around their board number buttons so that users and partners can skip boards on which discussion has ended.

How to Load PBN and BWS Files into BridgeLog on Your iPhone, iPad, and Computer (Mac or PC)

To produce the additional analyses in BridgeLog Pro and BridgeLog AI reports, the app needs two files that directors convey to ACBL after each duplicate game – a Portable Bridge Notation (PBN) file and a BridgeMate Wireless Session (BWS) file. These files are usually but not always available one to two hours after session completion.

Although it is possible to download these files to your iPhone, it is easiest and recommended to do so on a computer – either a Mac or a PC.

Downloading the PBN and BWS Files to Your Device
